  1. I definitely much prefer the removable battery type over Tesla's integrated battery / frame that can't be replaced in this application if the battery went bad it could be a big investment but at least the battery could be changed you don't have to buy an entire car for a battery going bad and there is no mistake batteries do go bad over time rather quickly too

  2. if the battery catches fire in the motion, it can melt the brake lines, and you are left with only parking brake if you still have power to operate it.

  3. That "bad" weld @ 11:30 is actually what you want. The "creator" at the end of an aluminum MIG weld is prone to cracking. By doubling back a bit, you have a lot more reinforcement surrounding the creator to help prevent cracking.

  4. All of this massive effort for vehicles that don't have enough range and don't recharge quickly enough proves the current state of the art of battery technology is still in its "Bronze Age"

The company that solves this battery problem will blow Amazon off the map in sales

  5. This guy is so concerned with reducing construction costs but what happens after a car accident and you need to replace the whole car because it's one bloody piece.

  6. These guys talking about weld inconsistency is funny. The older Gentleman must be a traditional hand welder with MIG or TIG. Getting automated welding equipment to be consistent across 100 plus battery tray assembly with GDT variations of stack ups in incredibly difficult, especially for first year run offs where process tweaks are still being made and verified. Good review overall, looks great!

  7. The chart at the end is a bit simplified. EPA range doesn't really mean anything. Tesla tends to over promise and under deliver. Others tend to be the other way around. Porsche Taycan is one example of that. EPA is 200 mi but people are doing much closer to 300 MI.
Then you throw driving style and to rain and climate into the mix and changes things radically.
And total range while being important you also have to factor charging speeds and charging curves. Everything I've seen shows the Audi e-tron even though it is very thirsty when it comes to efficiency ends up not mattering that much because it charges very fast and deep into the pack so that in reality if you were to road trip a Tesla and a Audi e-tron side by side there really wouldn't be much difference in the total time taken for a trip. And that's the only thing that's going to really matter to the end customer.
The e-tron is much heavier, much quieter, much better build quality, and much more luxurious than the Tesla .
that's what they do, that's what they sell, that's what their customers expect.
Also the battery weight isn't something you can really compare side by side. If the vehicle is not using the battery as a structural member it's going to be much lighter versus what we see here in the Ford where they obviously did make it a structural member. And I think in the Volkswagen and Audi stuff it is also a structural member and so their battery weights are going to be significantly heavier versus kilowatt hour in the pack.

  8. Can ford please have it’s structural engineers work or at least be consulted by the propulsion team? Engines always a mess. Infotainment ergonomics always a mess. Driving dynamics, safety, resistance to rust always good??? I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen a rusty ford. But timing chain issues? lol Those come in thousands lol.

  9. Great video…. Not great engineering. Many years ago I worked with Ford performance in Borehamwood. They had a great way of making a car lighter over time…. Rust!

  10. And how about a F-150 hybrid? I bet if Ford really tried, eg Atkinson cycle operating at min BSFC, heavily electric, they could get 30mpg combined, 250hp&lots of torque, 0-60 in 8.5 s, even w the pickup’s significant weight and it’s low Cd.
Variable-speed A/C & maybe heat without constant idling; plus power takeoff 120/240 even optional 480 VAC 3ph for work site, camping, emergency, first response/patrol.
Electronic traction control & drive for off-road, & manuvering like Rivian tank and K-turns?

  11. I wish they.d put that rear elec motor on the Ford Escape PHEV. I want to buy it but it.s only avail in FWD. An electric motor, a controller/ inverter, axles, and I know many other changes but still, how come I have to buy a Toyota or a Mitsubishi to get a PHEV SUV? Doesn’t have to be big elec rear motor, or PM, or Evan liquid cooled. Torquey IM would do it could be just 20 KW maybe more for towing edition..$1500 for those mods, at volume? Hey Ford I’m waving my money at you.

  12. Could you talk more about BMW I-3 pack? It is highest at ~10kg/kWh; so it is prob very srructural component in the vehicle?
Also, Li-ion really poor at very cold temps; how are these EV battery packs staying warm? Thx

  13. The only path for traditional auto makers is to buy or create electric subsidiaries and make new cars separate from their traditional brands. Over time wind down their ICE company as their Electric companies increase production to replacement levels.

  14. The battery chart is just one area Tesla is way ahead of any competition. Their massive advantage in software is able to propel every facet of their company.

  15. The Chevy Bolt is the Rodney Dangerfield of the EV world. It gets no respect. Check out that chart, it's the most efficient EV on there and it manages that feat in spite of its dorky crossover shape. Imagine that battery and motor combo in something sleek and aerodynamic!

  16. I'm wondering about corrosion between the pack and the body. Obviously the SMC is immune but if you get road salt solution trapped between the pack and the body, it's going to sit there and eat the floorpan up. Is there any angle to the pack mounting, so that that area could drain when parked?
